About Poyan Initiative

Settlement Starts With Understanding.

Who We Are

Poyan Initiative (PI) is a community-focused organization working to support newcomers as they build their lives and participate in their new communities.

We work with newly arrived migrants with legal status, asylum seekers, refugees, and people experiencing vulnerable or difficult circumstances. Our focus is settlement: helping people understand their new environment, develop confidence and capabilities, connect with opportunities and services, and move toward greater participation and independence.

We believe that every person brings their own history, knowledge, skills, culture, aspirations and strengths. Effective support begins by recognizing those strengths and understanding the circumstances in which people are living.

Why Poyan Initiative Exists

Starting a new life in a new country can be complex. People may have to learn a new language, understand unfamiliar institutions, navigate administrative systems, find housing and employment, access healthcare, continue their education and build new relationships—often at the same time.

These challenges are rarely isolated. A difficulty in one area can affect many others. Limited language skills can make employment and healthcare access harder. Lack of information can create administrative problems. Social isolation can affect confidence and wellbeing.

PI exists to help make this journey clearer, more connected and more empowering.

Our Understanding of Settlement

We see settlement as more than arrival, paperwork or access to individual services. It is a gradual process through which people come to understand their environment, develop confidence and capability, build connections, participate in society and move toward greater independence.

For this reason, PI considers settlement as an interconnected journey rather than a collection of separate services.

Understanding

Understanding systems, rights, responsibilities, services, opportunities and everyday life.

Confidence

Developing the confidence to communicate, make informed decisions and navigate unfamiliar situations.

Connection

Building relationships with people, services, institutions and communities.

Participation

Creating opportunities to learn, contribute, work, participate and become part of community life.

Independence

Strengthening people’s ability to increasingly navigate systems, access opportunities and make decisions for themselves.

How We Work

PI believes that meaningful programs begin with understanding—not assumptions.

Before developing a response, we seek to understand the people, the environment, the culture, the existing systems and the circumstances affecting the issue. We consider not only what people say they need, but also the underlying factors that may be contributing to those needs.

This helps us design responses that are relevant, practical, respectful and appropriate to the context in which they are delivered.

Our Approach

Understand → Identify → Analyse → Design → Act → Monitor → Learn → Adapt

This approach helps us remain responsive to changing circumstances and continuously improve our work.

We Start With the Person

Every newcomer has a different story. People arrive with different experiences, abilities, expectations, responsibilities and challenges.

We therefore aim to listen first, understand the situation and work with people rather than simply provide services to them.

Our goal is not to create dependence on support. It is to build capacity. Where possible, we want people to leave an interaction with greater knowledge, confidence, skills, connections or ability to take the next step themselves.

Culture and Context Matter

People communicate in different ways. Culture, traditions, previous experiences, family structures, social expectations and past interactions with institutions can influence how people understand information, express concerns and respond to support.

We believe effective settlement work requires cultural awareness, humility and the willingness to understand people within their own circumstances.

Respect for cultural identity does not prevent participation in a new society. We see diversity and inclusion as important parts of strong and connected communities.

Learning, Accountability and Adaptation

We believe good intentions are not enough. Programs should have clear purposes, realistic objectives and meaningful ways of understanding whether they are making a difference.

PI aims to build monitoring and evaluation into its work from the beginning. We want to understand what was done, who was reached, what changed, what did not work as expected, and what can be improved.

Lessons learned should not simply be recorded. They should inform future decisions and help PI adapt its programs to changing needs and circumstances.

Our Commitment

We want Poyan Initiative to be an organization that remains grounded in real human needs rather than becoming a collection of activities created simply to secure funding.

We aim to listen carefully, understand deeply, plan responsibly, act respectfully, measure what matters, learn from experience and improve continuously.

As PI grows, we want this way of working to remain at the heart of the organization.

Settlement Starts With Understanding

We believe people are better able to build their future when they have the knowledge, confidence, connections and opportunities to find their way.

Poyan Initiative is here to help make that journey clearer, more accessible and more empowering.
